Hackettstown Free Public Library

Open Borrowing FAQs

What is Open Borrowing? The Open Borrowing program is a reciprocal borrowing program for library patrons to check out materials “in-person” from more than 150 public libraries in northern New Jersey.

Who can participate?  Any resident with a valid library card from any participating Open Borrowing library is eligible.  Hackettstown patrons must be in “good standing”, with no outstanding fines or fees on their library accounts.

How does Open Borrowing work? It’s simple!  Request a little green “Open Borrowing” sticker from the front desk and attach it to your library card.  The reciprocating library will use your home card, add their barcode or issue you one of their cards.

If I check out books from another library, can I return them at Hackettstown Library?   No, your materials from other libraries must be returned at that library.  Please do not return them to us or put them in our bookdrop.  It is likely that you would be charged a late or lost book fee if you do not return your materials to the appropriate library.

Once I have my green sticker, can I borrow books from any library in New Jersey?   No, only those libraries that have agreed to participate will allow you to check out books. Check the website at www.openborrowing.org for a complete list.

Is the Northeast Branch of the Warren County Library a participating library?  No, Warren County Libraries do not participate in Open Borrowing with Hackettstown.

Which participating libraries are closest to Hackettstown? Mt. Olive Public Library, Washington Township Library (Schooley’s Mountain) and Washington Public Library (Boro).

How do I find out whether a participating library has the book I need?  Each library has a website with its online catalog accessible over the internet. Libraries are willing to provide that information by telephone as well.

What if I am late returning another library’s materials?  Each library has different fines and fees, and different policies regarding open borrowing.  Please inquire when visiting participating libraries.

Can I reserve books at participating libraries?  Open borrowers are allowed only limited borrowing privileges at most participating libraries.  Please inquire when visiting the participating library.

Can I keep materials longer through open borrowing?  Every library has its own rules regarding the length of time that items may be kept.  Please inquire when visiting the participating library.

Can I borrow DVDs and CDs?  Or just books?  Every library has its own rules regarding DVDs and other media.  Please call before traveling to any open borrowing library to be sure.
